Hi-Fi Harmony 2015 Music Seminar with Luxman in New Hampshire

Lux Gear

A glimpse of some attendees in front of the Luxman stacks

Hi-Fi Harmony 2015 was a great success. John Rein, owner of Audio Video Therapy & the host of the show, was very charismatic and effusive and a pleasure to be with. Attendance was roughly around 100 people.  Not only was it very well attended, the attendees felt the novelty of being able to listen to Luxman in New Hampshire!  Little did I know there are lots of Luxman enthusiasts in N.H. AXPONA 2015 Show Report

The Westin O’Hare | Chicago, IL

April 24 -26, 2015

CAT statement and JL5 driving Giya G3 at Axpona Saturday Night WBF

Vivid Audio GIYA G3, Luxman D-08u CD/SACD Player, & CAT monoblocks

A glimpse into Kyomi Audio’s room: A customer wanted to hear the big CAT Statement monoblocks compared to the little JL5 stereo amp we had played all day. The JL5 is a stereo amp with triode design using 4 x KT120 per channel, it puts out 25W Class A or 100W Class AB and retails for $13k. The Statements are monoblocks using 16 x KT120 per chassis, with a 200W triode design, Class A and retails for $100k a pair.

The big guys did not disappoint as the micro dynamics were put in the spotlight. The tonal color was more dramatic and the sound-stage became huge and spacious; it sucked the listeners in to the musical event.

It was a packed room of music lovers who were willing to delay dinner to indulge in a religious experience. Feet tapping and lots of comments exchanged over the music played at realistic club levels. It had all the vibes of a happening.

Refreshments (wine, beer & Georgian brandy to be specific) finished but the roomful of audience stuck around for more. What does this tell you about this experience with an exceptional stereo?  Continue reading

2015_CES_Collage 5 photos_no wordsCES 2015 was once again a terrific success!

Our gratitude: A big thanks to my good friends: Bruno Putzeys of Mola-Mola, for bringing his remarkable prototype DAC, Laurence Dickie and Philip Guttentag of Vivid Audio for their unfailing support, and Caelin Gabriel of Shunyata Research for going the extra yard to help us achieve absolutely first class sound with the best of the best amongst his staple of cables at the Venetian Hotel. Special thanks to Jayson Lloyd of Audio Elegance for helping with the set up of our rooms and Peter Ledermann of Soundsmith who lent us his absolutely superb Hyperion flagship moving-iron phono cartridge for our Luxman PD-171 turntable. This Soundsmith / Luxman combo produced some excellent sound which smoked the digital files in our listening rooms, in case you were wondering! Last, but certainly not least, a big thanks to Steve Rochlin of EnjoyTheMusic.com who streamed a live broadcast for us at the show. Continue reading

A big thanks to Coup de Foudre Audio in Montreal for hosting a fun music event and for their amazing hospitality.  Vivid Audio’s Chief Engineer/Designer, Laurence Dickie, was the presenter in an interactive technical and music seminar where he opened our eyes and ears, demonstrating how the sound we hear coming from the front of the loudspeaker is colored by what happens behind and inside your loudspeakers mechanically, electronically and acoustically. CES show report, a very exciting and newsy show

ces2014International CES in Las Vegas, NV

January 7 – 10, 2014

Mirage Penthouse Suite # D44

Venetian Hotel # 30-317

This year marked the 13th anniversary of our participation at CES.  A moment of truth came to me about what “A Higher Note” means.  We also conducted the “Quietest Demo” in history to prove a point about Eclipse TD’s speakers to the press and that demo definitely made an lasting impression.  We unveiled Luxman’s new 900 series and Vivid’s Baby Giya, the G4’s.  Mola-Mola’s showed its prototype DAC and the press had fun fidling with it.  We also announced our new relationship with Einstein Audio as their exclusive distributor for North America.  Details of our show report and the above are here.

RMAF 2013 Best Sounding DSDs, LPs, Personal Fav, and Inside Story

The Inside Story… set up was a nightmare but we came, we saw, we conquered!

While I feel like we got a lot done at the 2013 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, I have to say that getting everything humming was a bigger challenge this year compared to previous ones. I thought I would start the post with the “behind the scene” story, letting you know some of the unexpected problems we encountered, especially relating to digital music playback in an electrically noisy environment. California Audio Show Report 2013

California Audio ShowCalifornia Audio Show in Millbrae, CA, August 9 – 13, 2013

The California Audio Show was a lot of fun this year as we teamed up with dCS’s John Quick and Bea Lam from VTL. John Quick brought along the dCS Vivaldi DSD compatible DAC, while Bea Lam showcased the new VTL S200 stereo vacuum tube amplifier, which drove the G3 Giyas with aplomb. She also brought the 450 mono blocks along in case the S200 ran out of steam, but in fact this never happened, even though we drove the system at times, as hard as the room would allow.  Continue reading

Newport Beach Show Report 2013

The S.H.O.W. Newport Beach 2013

Yet another great experience and opportunity for a wonderful musical exchange! There were two albums that shone like diamonds during the Newport Show:

– Roy Gaines – I Got The T-Bone Walker Blues on 101/2″, 15 IPS two track tape linked

– Doug MacLeod – There’s a Time on 2 x 45 RPM LP linked

Ying Tan from Groove Note lent us a few Master Tapes of albums originally mastered by Bernie Grundman. In addition to the Roy Gaines track [GRV1002], the other two albums are: Continue reading

Gramophone Show Report 2013

Featuring Vivid G3 Giya loudspeakers,  we compared high rez PCM & DSD vinyl drops using a LUXMAN DA-06 DAC, versus the original records played on a Luxman PD-171 turntable.  We will also compared music at different sampling rates; the same music transferred from the analogue master tape in 24 bit at 44.1 / 88.2 / 96 / 176.4 & 192… A very noticeable increase in the quality of timbre & increase in resolution. Philip’s New York Audio Show Report 2013

We partnered up with Rhapsody Music and Cinema and GTT Audio featuring Vivid Audio’s G3 loudspeakers, Mola Mola’s Preamp and Monoblocks and Luxman’s DA-06 at the New York Show.  The sessions went really well, great seeing friends, customers & sharing some wonderful music.

We featured Vivid Giya loudspeakers, comparing high rez PCM & DSD vinyl drops using a LUXMAN DA-06 DAC, versus the original records played on Brinkmann turntable.  Music at different sampling rates were spun.

Here’s a partial list of the well implemented DSD sounds at the show… so sweet & musical, like great analogue, absolutely spell binding: Continue reading

Philip’s Montreal Coup de Foudre Show Report 2013

MontrealShowPhotoRecapThe Montreal show has been one of my favorites and this year it more than lived up to my expectations.  We had a great turn out and shared a lot of laughs with great company.  We met lots of long-time local Luxman fans and were able to produce great sound even though the gear arrived so late that we did not have time to properly set up the speakers.

We will be returning to Montreal in Autumn for a Music Seminar with Graeme Humprey at Coupe de Foudre to do the gear and artists justice, kicking the music experience up another notch. Continue reading

An afternoon of musical bliss – seminar in San Diego 2013

G1 Giya_Philip 2 On A Higher Note Music Seminar with Audio Revelation

I sincerely appreciated the opportunity to listen to the wonderful Vivid loudspeakers. I’ve always wanted to hear them because of what I read about them. Of course, I thought they were sensational. As a scientist, engineer, and loudspeaker design enthusiast, I marveled at their design… What I liked most about the afternoon, was the emphasis on the music and not the equipment. I also enjoyed hearing the differences between various digital formats and analog – a tremendous learning experience. Thanks for providing us with an afternoon of musical bliss … “ – Jon Whitledge / Whitledge Designs / designer/builder of the world-famous Magic Bus

Equipment List: Brinkmann Bardo turntable, Luxman DA-06 DSD compatible DAC, Mola Mola preamplifier, Mola Mola monoblock amplifiers & Vivid G1 Giya speakers.
